Doug Sumaraga chats with Robert [Wesley] Swen, DPT, about the most valuable aspects of being a clinician and instructor for physical therapy and how the field is evolving with technology and telehealth. In addition to advancements in technology for teaching and providing care, they also discuss the challenges of bureaucracy in healthcare and the disconnect between what patients and clinicians find valuable and what insurance companies assign value to.

Robert Swen

Robert [Wesley] Swen, DPT

Robert [Wesley] Swen, DPT has been an adjunct professor in the physical therapy department of Loma Linda university since 1995. With 34 years of patient care experience, he has spent most of that time working within the occupational medicine arena. While managing a successful physical therapy practice, he developed expertise in onsite ergonomic evaluations, injury prevention, and worksite modification. As an industry consultant he has counseled many state and national businesses including Cal Trans, La-Z-Boy furniture, and numerous school districts. With an interest in sports therapy, he also worked with UC Riverside's athletic department in the early 90's.

Presently, Dr. Swen is a full time assistant professor in the Loma Linda University School of Allied Health Profession's entry level Doctor of Physical Therapy program and is also pursuing a EdD in Leadership and Learning in Organizations at Vanderbilt University. His interests lie in the education of future physical therapists and improving the overall healthcare system by promoting and improving diversity, equity, and inclusion in the field. His current capstone project is centered around nurse retention within a midwest hospital system.

Doug Sumaraga

Doug is a serial entrepreneur with over 30 years of experience managing and developing technology firms in the Silicon Valley as CTO, COO, & CEO.  As a strategic advisor and technology consultant to several Fortune 50 companies (IBM, SAP, Apple, Adobe, Agilent, Microsoft, HP, Northrop Grumman, Boeing among them), Doug offers business acumen and technical expertise as a transformational leader, architect, and “let’s get it done” executor. 

Doug holds Biology (pre-med) and Medical Technology degrees in the Adventist Educational Health System and found his passion in technology continuing his post grad studies in Informatics and programming at UC Berkeley.
